About DGI Byen

DGI Byen is a vibrant hub in the heart of Copenhagen, where sports, culture, and business come together. Every year, over one million people visit our facilities – from the swimming centre and sports halls to conferences, trade fairs, and cultural events.

DGI Byen was founded as an independent institution in 1995 through a collaboration between DGI, De Danske Skytteforeninger, and the City of Copenhagen. In 1997, we opened our doors to the city’s residents and associations, with the ambition of strengthening community, public health, and participation through broad access to sports and culture.

Today, DGI Byen houses some of the city’s largest sports facilities: four halls – two with spectator stands – a modern shooting centre, fitness facilities, and a swimming centre with five pools. Over 700,000 guests use our sports and leisure offers annually, with about half of them visiting the Water Culture House. The City of Copenhagen also regularly uses our facilities on behalf of around 100 local clubs, schools, and institutions.

In addition to sports, DGI Byen is also a key player in the conference and cultural scene. Each year, we host over 1,600 private and public events – from company parties and trade fairs to public events. As operator of Øksnehallen and Building 55, we also facilitate more than 20 major cultural events annually, in collaboration with our culture partners. Among them is the Photographic Center, which is based in Building 55 and presents rotating exhibitions throughout the year.

At DGI Byen, we work to promote physical, mental, and social health through movement and community.

We create spaces where people meet – for sports, culture, conferences, and social activities – and we believe the greatest change happens through community. Our facilities and activities inspire people to engage, move, and connect – regardless of background, age, or purpose.

Profits from conferences, trade fairs, and business events help finance and develop movement initiatives for children, young people, and the local community in Copenhagen.
