A historic venue in Copenhagen

The history of Øksnehallen

Øksnehallen is an elegant, historic building located right in the heart of the vibrant, old Meatpacking District in Copenhagen. City architect Ludvig Fenger was behind the construction of the Brown Meatpacking District, where Øksnehallen opened as the central cattle hall in 1901. The hall had space for 1600 animals, and its name refers back to the old word for ox, namely øksne. Just 20 years later, the hall and the Cattle Market square in front had become outdated, and in 1934 the activities moved to the newly built White Meatpacking District. However, Øksnehallen continued to house animals until the 60s. In 1984 the Brown Meatpacking District was listed as a protected site, and in 1993 a thorough renovation of Øksnehallen began, after which it was used for cultural events and exhibitions during Cultural City ’96. Since 2005 Øksnehallen has been a part of DGI Byen. Today, the hall hosts a wide variety of events and functions, such as congresses, dinners, and expos, and is also known for its large photography exhibitions.
