The story of Øksnehallen

A historic venue unlike any other in the heart of Copenhagen

Øksnehallen is an elegant, historic building located right in the heart of the lively, old Meatpacking District in Copenhagen. The city architect Ludvig Fenger was responsible for building the Brown Meatpacking District, where Øksnehallen opened as the central cattle hall in 1901. The hall could accommodate 1,600 animals, and its name refers back to the old word for ox, namely øksne. Already 20 years later, the hall and the Cattle Market in front had become outdated, and in 1934 the activities moved to the newly built White Meatpacking District. Øksnehallen, however, continued to be used for stabling animals until the 1960s.

In 1984 the Brown Meatpacking District was designated a protected area, and in 1993 a comprehensive renovation of Øksnehallen began, which was then used for cultural events and exhibitions during Cultural Capital ‘96. Since 2005 Øksnehallen has been part of DGI Byen. Today, the hall hosts many different types of events, such as congresses, dinners, and fairs, and it is also known for its major photography exhibitions.

With its 5,500 m², Øksnehallen is one of Copenhagen’s best and most well-established venues for hosting all types of events, gatherings, and exhibitions. Located in the center of the Meatpacking District, just 50 meters from the Central Station and with space for up to 3,500 – 4,000 guests, Øksnehallen is the obvious choice for your next event.

Here you can find inspiration from our events over the past years. Øksnehallen consists of one large space, where distinctive columns support the roof construction with large skylights. The space is flexible and can easily be divided into smaller units.
