A historic venue in Copenhagen

The history of Øksnehallen

Øksnehallen is an elegant, historic building situated right in the heart of Copenhagen’s vibrant, old Kødby district. City architect Ludvig Fenger was responsible for constructing the Brown Kødby, where Øksnehallen opened as the central cattle hall in 1901. The hall could accommodate 1,600 animals, and its name refers back to the old word for ox, namely øksne. Already 20 years later, the hall and Cattle Market square in front became obsolete and in 1934, activities moved to the newly built White Kødby. However, Øksnehallen was still used for housing animals until the 1960s. In 1984, the Brown Kødby was listed as protected and in 1993, a comprehensive renovation of Øksnehallen began, and it was repurposed for cultural events and exhibitions during City of Culture ’96. Since 2005, Øksnehallen has been part of DGI Byen. Today, the hall hosts a wide variety of events and functions, such as congresses, dinners, and fairs, and is also known for its large photographic exhibitions.
