Have we become sicker, or is it the development of society that contributes to our mental challenges?

We live in a time with a significant increase in psychiatric diagnoses among both children and adults. Around 25 percent of the population receives at least one psychiatric diagnosis each year, and around 10 percent take antidepressant medication. At the same time, the prescription of psychotropic drugs for children has increased drastically.

  • But what is the cause of this “diagnosis epidemic”?

  • Are we really sicker and more deviant than before?

  • Or has our understanding of illness and health changed?

  • Have we become more inclined to diagnose and put our challenges into words?

  • And what is happening in a society that increasingly understands its problems through the culture of diagnosis?

These questions are the focus of this talk, during which Svend Brinkmann sheds light on the influence of the culture of diagnosis and the challenges we face today – especially in relation to neurodivergence.
