The story of Øksnehallen

A historic venue unlike any other in the heart of Copenhagen

Øksnehallen is an elegant, historic building located right in the heart of the lively, old Meatpacking District in Copenhagen. City architect Ludvig Fenger oversaw the construction of the Brown Meatpacking District, where Øksnehallen opened as the central cattle hall in 1901. The hall had room for 1,600 animals, and the name refers back to the old word for ox, namely øksne. Only 20 years later, the hall and the Cattle Market in front became outdated, and in 1934 the activities moved to the newly built White Meatpacking District. Øksnehallen, however, was used to stable animals until the 1960s.

In 1984, the Brown Meatpacking District was preserved and in 1993, a thorough renovation of Øksnehallen began, and it was used for cultural events and exhibitions during Culture City ‘96. Since 2005, Øksnehallen has been part of DGI Byen. Today, the hall hosts many types of events, such as congresses, dinners, and fairs, and is also known for its major photo exhibitions.

With its 5,500 m², Øksnehallen is one of Copenhagen’s best and most well-established venues for hosting all types of events, functions, and exhibitions. Located in the middle of the Meatpacking District, just 50 meters from the Central Station and with space for up to 3,500 – 4,000 guests, Øksnehallen is the ideal choice for your next event.

Here you can get inspired by our events from recent years. Øksnehallen consists of one large space, where characteristic columns support the roof with large skylights. The room is flexible and can easily be divided into smaller units.
